Junior Cycle Programme

Junior Certificate provision in Grange PPS is innovative and varied in line with curricular expectations.

Students follow courses up to Higher level in a variety of programmes of study, including:

Core Examination Subjects

  • English
  • Irish
  • Mathematics
  • History
  • Science

Core Non-Examination / Wellbeing Courses

Courses designed to improve social, personal, emotional and mental health and wellbeing, as well as build core communication skills.

Subjects on offer in this area include:

  • Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE)
  • Career Guidance modules
  • Civic Social & Political Education (CSPE)
  • Physical Education (PE)

Short Programmes

A new feature of the Junior Certificate where students can complete 100 hours of study as opposed to 200 hours of study in a subject area over three years.

Short Programmes offer flexibility to schools to identify key areas of study that would enhance student learning and broaden their learning experiences.

Short programmes currently on offer include:

Optional Subjects

Students also follow four optional subjects selected from a list of bands generated yearly based on student demand, from the following subjects:

  • Visual Art
  • Engineering
  • Geography
  • Home Economics
  • Music
  • Materials Technology
  • Wood
  • Graphics
  • Business Studies
  • French
  • Spanish

Over the course of their three-year Junior Certificate, students will now achieve competency across 24 learning statements and 6 Key Skills set down by the Department of Education.

All subject teachers in Grange Post Primary School have actively engaged with a variety of CPD and training over the last four years, to increase skills and enhance teaching methodologies; as well as plan effectively and develop competency to deliver new courses. It is our intention to continue with active engagement with the new programme and our preparation is at an advanced stage.
